THE HORROR GENRE
September 25th, 2009 by christo
About the Genre of horror stories, the typical elements that they have is suspense, and entertainment (keeps you reading it until the climax and then boom, you’re hit with so much emotion and you feel like you are inside the book) and most horror stories can be quite scary and make your body shiver with fear or you feel drops and drops of sweat sliding down your brow. I mean when I started writing this story, I didn’t know much about horror. I often despised horror because I didn’t like it. I am always prone to being frightened and whenever I see and read something scary, I have nightmares at night. Whenever I read something that does this to me, I can safely say it is either a horror or mass killing genre type of book.
I read a few twelve page stories on the horror genre and I felt compelled to read more but I just didn’t want to cause myself to have nightmares. The stories I read had storylines such as a haunted house or lane, ghosts that spook people who are thought to be living people or something happens to a dead family member. Something along the lines of that mysterious, haunting type of experience that you feel when you read these types of books/stories. I can safely say that reading some horror short stories has given me some ideas of what to right but I don’t actually know if this is a horror story that I have written. I mean it was to me, I was sweating as if I was in the middle of a fire. However I have got to say writing a horror story has been a strange yet worthy experience.

Active Voices
September 24th, 2009 by christo
The Active Voices page will contain a variety of written pieces in which students have very specific purposes and audiences in mind. These will range from writing to inform, to describe, to explain through to expressing a grievance. Read and enjoy as more pieces are added and see how young people can get things done by using using words.

Genre Writing
August 23rd, 2009 by christo
My students were introduced to the concept of writing in various genres which involved a lot of reading of various genre types, workshopping by writing short pieces in different genres and finally writing a sustained piece of writing in a particular genre. I have a couple of examples on the creative writing page. This activity can also be found on my website on the year 9 page.

July 15th, 2009 by christo
Angelo’s piece of writing comes from a young person who is part of a group of students who best respresent what it means to be Australian: a diverse group comprising different cultural bacgkrounds and experiences, but who are united in the most important ways possible.

Australian Identity (The Bushfire Starters)
April 20th, 2009 by christo
This story (Senior Voices Page) is centred on two young teenagers who make the foolish mistake of playing with fire, their fleeing and their capture. The story was written with the hope that it may shine light on the consequences of one’s actions including the devastating damage they can have on not only their surroundings and those within, but them themselves. For this reason, it is suggested that the story be read by people of all age as mistakes and consequences are not limited to any specific age group.

Creative Writing
March 22nd, 2009 by christo
If a student ever approaches you with a desire to write a novel, to publish their writing or to find out how to go about doing so, then take the time to encourage them and try to put them on the right path. This was the case with the writer of “Phantom Magyk-Journey of The Soul” which you’ll find on the “Creative Voices” page. Who knows where this first step will lead him in the literary world. I also suggested that he visit a site recommended on my own website Christo’s Lucky Dip Links which contains useful tips for both effective writing and publishing, http://fictionwriting.about.com/?once=true

A Tribute
February 23rd, 2009 by christo
Please take time out to visit the “Free Writing” page to the read one student’s tribute to the community of Marysville which was devastated by the recent bushfires here in the state of Victoria (Australia). She wrote this as part of a free writing task prior to the bushfires but nevertheless thought this would be fitting tribute to the people of Marysville and other similar communities which have been horribly affected by the recent tragedy. Her piece to writing shows what kind of significance a place and its people can have on the hearts and minds of those who live there or just visit. Such places therefore never die as long as others remember and the will and commitment exits to rebuild and move forward to a promising future. And we know and have faith that the community of Marysville will do just that.

Free Writing
February 22nd, 2009 by christo
Some of the best writing from students can occur when so many of the restrictions we teachers are apt to impose are removed. Often it is enough just to let students put pen to paper and write on topics which suit them. On the free writing page on this blog you’ll see some examples. All that was provided were topics, some of which were creative while other topics asked the students to put forward their opinions or argue a particular case. There weren’t even any length limits. It’s a great way to see where your students are at the start of the year too. Check the examples out on the following link;
